Save Money When Buying A Wedding Dress

I think every bride to be dreams of her wedding dress, that moment in her life where she can look flawless. But if you have started wedding dress shopping you will know it can be pricey. I have come up with a few ways to save money while dress shopping, I have aimed this at the bride’s dresses but some tips can be applied to bridesmaid dresses too.

Dress tip one:
One thing that is getting more and more popular is Brides to be buying their dream wedding dress from Ebay. Quality and reliability varies massively, so research is vital. If you strike it right, you can get a made-to-measure dress for a fraction of a shop price. Simply search for "custom wedding dress" on eBay.
I have heard some really bad stories about sellers on ebay and how easy it it to get ripped off so remember Ebay has ratings system so carefully inspect what others have said before buying.

Dress tip two:
Secondhand dresses are becoming a massive part of saving money when planning a wedding and one way to get your hands on one is to use second-hand dress sites. They offer beautiful dresses for just a fraction of the RRP.
My advice if you are going to do this is to try on dresses in shops first. When you know the style and size you want you can then look online to see if you can find a secondhand version to get the dress much less. You could even buy accessories secondhand too.
Some sites to try are:

  • SellMyWeddingDress
  • Preloved
  • The Dressmarket
  • Gumtree
  • EBay

Dress tip three:
Why not help yourself and others?
Oxfam has eleven specialist bridal departments that stock dresses from £150. Many dresses are donated by designers, straight from the catwalk and many are brand new. So not only can you bag gowns for a fraction of the price, you help a charity at the same time.

Dress tip four:
Department stores have started selling wedding dresses for a 'wedding on a budget' and BHS, Debenhams and many more offer great low cost alternatives, Its not just wedding dresses, flower girl dresses, bridesmaid dresses and even mans suits were spotted on the highstreet.

While having a look in Debenhams I found wedding dresses starting from £170 and some were on sale from just £50.
In BHS I found bridal dresses from £80-£475, as well as bridesmaids' dresses.

Hope this helps. Do you have any tips?

Question and answer #1

With a lot of friends and relatives getting married I have been asked so many questions.
Many brides to be keep asking the same questions so Over the next couple of weeks I will keep uploading ‘Questions every bride might ask’ as you can most likely tell I will be answering most asked questions- in detail.
From prices to flowers every question you need answering, want to ask a question? Send a message to my Facebook page ‘Your biggest day’ or email me at yourbiggestday@gmail.com

Q. What are some ways to trim the budget without sacrificing the things I want?

A. According to surveys the average wedding costing about £22,000, a way to get the price down would help, right? Well there are so many ways to cut costs without affecting your overall vision for your wedding, The most easiest way is to cut down the gust list. This will reduce your catering costs, invitations, favors and even the number of centerpieces.

Have you thought about not having a summer wedding? You can save money by booking an off-peak season wedding date or by having your wedding on any day of the week but Saturday.
Its not ideal I know but it saves so much money you will be surprised, some venues also do mid week packages that are only a fraction of the price of a Saturday wedding.

Usually the bride will pay for bridesmaid dresses and this can be pricey but China has a roaring dressmaking industry you can tap into via eBay. If you find the right seller you can find a dress from £15 or a made to measure dress around the £100 mark. These prices are what I found on Ebay by just searching "Bridesmaid dresses".
There are a ton or sellers from china, read reviews and ratings before thinking about ordering and if they own an ebay shop google it! If I order something and it’s awful I will mostlikely write a bad review on ebay. It's easy to be scammed on eBay and there are Ebay horror stories, so have your wits about you.
The delivery sometimes can be high to cover some costs too so make sure you check postage fee before buying.
Another tip for Ebay dress shopping is to buy one then buy the rest. It can be risky because they may run out of stock by the time you have the first dress but I would rather pay £20 for a bad dress then £100 for 5 dresses I can’t use or reuse!

There are many second-hand dress sites that offer dresses for a fraction of the RRP. Some sites to try are SellMyWeddingDress, Preloved and Confetti's for-sale section. Other good online places to try are Selling groups on facebook, The Dressmarket, Gumtree and eBay.I know some people that have gone dress shopping and have fallen in love with a wedding dress that is out of there budget but found the same dress secondhand online for just a fraction of the price.

Offer beer, wine and a signature cocktail instead of a full bar or you could ask the venue if you can supply some of your own alcohol, some venues allow this but watch out most charge a fee for you to do this. I would advice bringing your own alcohol if the price of the booze and the fee is less than the venue supplying. Something to keep in mind when buying wedding booze is some sellers, such as  Tesco Wine, offer a "sale or return" policy (Ts&Cs apply), letting you take back any wine you don't get through on the day.

Cakes can be pricey, My tips to save are:
Order a small or two-tiered cake for the cutting and then supplement it with a larger sheet cake (hidden back in the kitchen). This way you can have your cake and eat it too.
Buy a simple sponge cake from the supermarket and then decorate it yourself. You can buy glitter, sugar flowers and edible pearls cheaply.
Instead of cake, why not go for a cheese wheel? Serve it in the evening as part of or instead of a buffet with crackers and relishes, which can be bought cheaply.

If you and your husband to be are paying for the wedding family members and friends will be more understanding than you think they will be, it’s expensive. What my partner and me are doing is asking family members to buy little bits that will help so much for example, the guest book or the photo book or even favors.

While a hotel or country pub is in an obvious choice for a reception, don't forget about church halls, village halls or local sports clubs. This is another way of cutting costs. Using a big company name hotel can be the start of a big payment for you and a hefty profit for them.

Invites and save the dates can be pricey but designing and making your own invites is easy, especially if you use free DIY printing site. You’ll have to pay for paper and ink when you print them out yourself but if you want to cut paper and ink costs you could always Email them?
Etsy is amazing for invites and save the dates, it’s full of sellers who will design bespoke invitations for as little as £5 and email you a PDF to print off yourself. Just search for 'printable wedding invitation' in Etsy to find them.
Etsy also offers already printed invitations and some of them are a bargain price for personalized cards just check if the cost includes envelopes and factor in the cost of postage. You could always buy some cheap envelopes.

A fair few brides will hire a makeup artist but if you can go without one try to, this could save £100's. Follow makeup tutorials on YouTube or do you have a friend that is handy with a makeup brush? if so asking them for help on the day could save money.

Going off the last point, Has any of your friends got talents? Ask for their help as a wedding present. It'll cut the costs and perhaps save on a gift for them. For example If you know a cake maker and they could make your cake and you just pay for ingredients etc, you could save up to £500!!

I hope I have helped you with these tips, IF you have any Questions yourself please contact me!

Questions you should ask when viewing your venue.

When viewing your wedding venue there are a few main questions you should ask before you book your date; I have put together a list of my questions. Whether it’s over email or in person these questions will help decide if the venue is right for you.

1) What dates are available?
The big main question, brides to be are booking years in advance now, you should book early to avoid disappointment.

2) Are you licensed for civil ceremonies?
Don’t forget to ask for the local registrar's contact details too, from march 2015 the notice period will be going up from 15 to 28 days.

3) How many people do you cater for?
You should check the venues minimum and maximum numbers to make sure this venue is right for you, sometimes the night and day numbers are different too.

4) Can we bring our own alcohol?
If you can this will save you money but they may charge a fee.

5) Do you have any packages and what are they?
This is a good question especially if you are planning on getting married in a hotel, No matter what package you get make sure you read the fine print.

6) Can we have confetti?
Some churches and buildings do not allow confetti.

7) How many weddings will be held on the date?
You will want to feel like the only bride so if there is another wedding on the date you want, see if there will be any separation in place.

8) What are the rates for different days or times (Friday, Saturday, Sunday; afternoon, evening)?

9) How much of a deposit is required and when does everything need to be payed by?

10) What's the cancellation policy? (Just in case)

11) What time will my guests have to leave the venue?
You don’t’t want to be sprung with an ending time on the day.

How to be the best maid of honor ever

So you want to be the best maid of honour ever?
Before and on the day there are a few things you will need to do such as view a venue or help choose invitations and just all together be there. There are a few tips you might forget, but don't fear I have listed them below.

Before the day

Many brides will start to panic that they haven’t made the right decisions. for example ‘have I got the right dress?’ and ‘will my guests like the venue?’ just make sure she knows its perfect and calm her down, its her day doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.
The bride will always appreciate you making space in your diary for her a lot goes in to planning a wedding and the bride has chosen you to help. If you can't even make it to a dress fitting that has been planned around you it doesn't look great. If you can’t make it, be apologetic and try not to give the bride the impression that her big day doesn't matter to you. because it does! well at least I hope so.

Traditionally the bride should pay for the bridesmaids dresses but If you know your bride is struggling with money, offer to pay for a part of your outfit, such as the dress, shoes or accessories. Even if she insists on paying for everything.

The bride will want you to be honest with her, if she asks
you opinion
on something tell her the truth, just maybe try not to make it harsh, for example if you don't like the bridesmaid dresses let her down easy.

On the day

If the bride is anything like me she may have a list of things that need to be done on the day, just small things that will need to be checked or done for example making sure the photographer turns up on time.
You might need to assist the bride in to her dress and help with hair and makeup, not just before the wedding she might need help touching up her makeup after the ceremony if there has been tears.
help the bride with her veil and train (if she has one). I have seen many weddings where brides have tripped on their train.
If the bride has a big dress on, she may be restricted in what she can do herself and this is where you can step in and help!

Make a
toast or a speech during the wedding party since it is tradition and most people love hearing these friendship stories!
I will be asking my maid of honour to do little bits like make sure people are signing the guest book.

It's not a lot to do but I promise you it will have the bride thanking you the day after! good luck and enjoy your day!

5 Tips for being a budget bride, without looking like one.

As we all know your wedding day can be pretty pricey. I've made a list of a few ways a bride on a budget can save money without looking like a budget bride, Perfect.

1) Trim the guest list.
You don't need every man and his dog to witness your wedding, the ceremony should be a group of people that mean a lot to you and your partner. This might be hard if you have a big family and friends but what me and my Husband to be are doing is inviting close family no more than 50 to the wedding then inviting others to the party after.

2) Think on your feet, Don't fall for the shoe trap.
So ladies think back to the last wedding you went to, what did the brides shoes look like? you most likely won't remember. what a waste of money right?
you don't need designer or expensive wedding shoes, you can find something just as classy and comfortable on the highstreet.

3) Two for the price of one,
Why Don't you have your favors as place names? sound a bit silly but it actually looks good, put names on favor boxes or little hand made tags on favor bags.

4) Have two cakes,
Wedding cakes are really expensive my two ways round this are:

  •  To have a cupcake tower with a small wedding cake on top to cut in to. cupcakes look cute and are a lot cheaper than a 3 tiered cake and everyone will get one.
  • To have a small wedding cake for cutting in to for photos and to also have a couple of plain cakes. I think this is a good idea you could have different flavors that appeal to everyone for example chocolate and Victoria sponge and you don't look like a budget bride, just thoughtful.

5) Up-cycle,
Why don't you reuse jam jars as centerpieces add flowers and candles for a rustic effect. You could also use small jam jars as favors, add sweets and cover with a bit or material and tie with string or a bow.

Do you have any tips? please let me know in the comments below.
